UFC Rio: Silva vs. Okami Main Card Results, Breakdown

| by

Four out of five isn’t that bad. Following the Brazilian fighters going six for six on the preliminary card, the hometown fighters went four for five on the main card. Somewhere inside the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Cane is sitting there thinking to himself, why me?

The fans in attendance continued their fun into the main card, supporting their Brazilian fighters with all they could muster up. The fighters responded with four finishes and one exciting 15 minute battle worth of fight of the night honors. The key to winning tonight was to be Brazilian, if you weren’t you were likely gonna lose.

It was 13 years (UFC 17.5: Ultimate Brazil) since the UFC last came to Brazil but after tonight the fans won’t have to wait that long to see the UFC again. Even before the fighters stepped into the Octagon there was talk of coming back next year and breaking the attendance record.

Main Card (Pay-per-view):

205 lbs.: Luiz Cane vs. Stanislav Nedkov – Stanislav Nedkov by 1st rd. TKO

The Brazilian Luiz Cane came in with the striking advantage, but looked as if he didn’t respect the striking of Nedkov. After letting numerous over hand right land while continuing to keep his hands low, it proved to be the downfall of Cane.

265 lbs.: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub – Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by 1st rd TKO [KO of the Night]

WOW! Things started out with Schaub getting the better of the exchanges but that didn’t last. Big Nog landed a combination that hurt the Hybrid, following it up with a flurry landing multiple shots to the head. Schaub went down and one more shot flattened him out, fight over.

155 lbs.: Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson – Edson Barboza by Split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) [Fight of the Night]

A great fight between two solid, technical strikers in the lightweight division that went back and forth the whole fight. Barboza landed the bigger punches

205 lbs.: Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio Rua – Mauricio Rua 1st rd. KO

A right hand stumbled Griffin, he went to the ground and Rua pounced and landed multiple hammerfists to turn the lights out on Griffin.

Main Event:

185 lbs.: Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami – Anderson Silva 2nd rd. TKO

If anyone makes a fight look easy it’s the UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The two fighters didn’t touch gloves and Silva was all business in the opening round. He turned it on in the final 30 seconds, rocking Okami to set up the beginning of the end. In round two, Silva was in his comfort zone and dropped his hands inviting Okami in while landing big counters. After being dropped Okami once, Silva dropped him again and finished the fight with a mini flurry.
