UFC on FX 4 Round-by-Round Review: Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida

Round 1: The crowd chants for the braided Guida. He comes out aggressive, as always and he's got Maynard moving backward. Guida having success early on, landing strikes off of solid footwork. Maynard looking to counter, but he's having difficulty putting his hands on Guida so far. Maynard cut over the nose. Guida in and out before Maynard can touch him; he's landing more, but he's not landing much.

Round 2: Maynard gets poked in the eye early on, but they don't break for long. Maynard looking to load up on his punches, taking a lower stance. Guida making Maynard chase him. Maynard having a hard time pinning Guida down. Guida not too active with his offense, mostly just evading midway through the second. Both men advancing, but having trouble landing flush. Guida with a one-two and a partially blocked head kick. Maynard doing a little better cutting off the cage, but still not hitting on much. The crowd stops booing briefly when Maynard finally gets his hands on Maynard. Guida nails Maynard with a flush head kick and follows i with a series of straight punches.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Round 3: Guida with an awkward but effective knee. Maynard tags Guida with a few shots square; Guida drops his hands and jives at him in response. Guida moving constantly on the outside, showboating now. Having had enough, Maynard shoots in deep, drives hard for the takedown, but Guida defends easily. Guida shoots for a single but backs off of it. Maynard clearly frustrated as the crowd boos. Guida content to hold the outside, feint and peck away with his jab. Maynard chases after Guida with a powerful flurry, but Guida evades all of it. Guida complains about an eyepoke, but the ref doesn't stop it. Guida isn't exactly beating Maynard down, but he's definitely winning the fight.

Round 4: A minute into the round and Maynard manages to briefly clinch Guida and put together some offense, but Guida breaks away, complaining that Maynard has grabbed his braids for the second time in the fight. Guida back on the outside, pecking away, but never putting anything dangerous out there. Maynard touches Guida with a solid right as he backs away, but Guida shakes it off. Maynard headhunting, he manages to land another right. Guida cracks him with a right and Maynard answers with a volley of knees. Maynard stands in front of Guida after holding him to the cage, hitting him with repeated punches. He stands in front of him and gives him the double fingers. Maynard with his hands down, shouting at Guida while he nails him with punches. Guida fires back, but Maynard just takes it and smiles. He muscles out of a takedown and slaps on a tight guillotine. Guida shakes out of it and holds top position until the bell.

Round 5: The crowd chants Maynard's name now, as The Bully plods after Guida. Maynard starting to get in on Guida some, but Guida comes after him with a hard body kick and a mean right that looks to have stung Maynard. Maynard tells Guida to come one and then tracks him a good right hand across the cheek. Guida starting to land more effectively as Maynard leaves himself more open on the way in. Maynard shoots and Guida shakes him off easily. Halfway mark and Guida is in the lead again, seemingly content to hold that lead. After Guida literally runs to the side, the referee warns him for not engaging, telling him that he'll take a point. Maynard manages to dog him some against the fence before he shoots for the takedown. Maynard working hard for the takedown; Guida is down to a knee and defending. Thirty seconds to go and Guida gets to his feet. Maynard lands a few knees from the clinch as Guida stands. No one lands anything in the last ten seconds.
