UFC 152 Round-by-Round Review: Joseph Benavidez vs. Demetrious Johnson

We will crown the first-ever UFC flyweight champion next, as Joseph Benavidez (16-2) battles Demetrious Johnson (15-2-1). The referee will be Yves Lavigne.

Round 1: Johnson avoids Benavidez thanks to his speed right away. Knee to the body by Johnson after a left. Benavidez traps Johnson against the cage, negating his speed advantage and looking for a takedown. Johnson lands a knee to the head, and one to the body. Body shot by Benavidez just misses.

Right lands by Johnson as Benavidez tries coming in to attack. Series of strikes by Johnson after Benavidez slips. I'll be honest folks, there is so much action in this fight, I know I am missing some. These two guys are so quick. Benavidez attempting to slow Johnson down by keeping him pinned against the Octagon. A minute left in the round, as Johnson lands a right. Benavidez throwing wildly, almost seems annoyed a little by not being able to cut off Johnson.

Round 2: Johnson with a left, right and a hook after nearly taking the back of Benavidez. Head kick misses by Benavidez. Nice leg kick lands by Benavidez. Benavidez throws his right to trap Johnson against the cage, but is unable to do any damage. Benavidez misses on the takedown attempt. Right hand connects by Johnson. Another takedown attempt by Benavidez is denied by Johnson. Johnson slips behind Benavidez after an attack but can't get him to the mat. Less than a minute to go. Solid right kick by Johnson.

Round 3: Benavidez appears to have found a nice rhythm, landing with a little more consistent here in the third. Uppercut by Benavidez, who misses with a head kick that brings some noise from the crowd. Cut on the head of Benavidez now, as Johnson starts to apply some pressure. Swooping left misses by Johnson. Right by Benavidez connects. Benavidez tries for a back-fist, but Johnson ducks. Benavidez with a takedown, but can't keep Johnson on the canvas long enough to do any damage. Ninety-seconds remain in the round, as Benavidez throws a big right. Left hook by Benavidez. Eye poke by Johnson on Benavidez, but ref says he didn't see it and doesn't allow Benavidez time to recoup. Eye poke was pretty obvious. Canadian crowd becoming restless with this fight, as Johnson lands a nice right.

Round 4: Inside leg kick lands by Johnson, as Benavidez spins and avoids a strike. Counter right hook connects by Johnson. Benavidez lands with a big right that drops Johnson, as Benavidez swarms and goes for a guillotine choke with just under four minutes to go. Benavidez goes to the mount, seems to have his hands locked under the chin and together as Johnson tries to work his legs free. Johnson working to keep Benavidez from getting his hands together, and he survives the choke. Johnson grabs a leg, but that allows Benavidez to go back to mount. Benavidez looks to be going for an arm-triangle choke, but is unable to do it and Johnson gets to his feet, avoiding a tough submission attempt by Benavidez. Two minutes to go and Benavidez is dominating this round. Benavidez drops but Johnson winds up on top and takes his back. Johnson ducks and gets the takedown. Another duck-under takedown for Johnson, who moves to side control with 20 seconds left.

Round 5: Johnson starts off with the kicks again. Kick to the body by Johnson lands, as Benavidez misses with a right. Johnson throws a wild right that misses, but comes back and gets his third takedown of the match. Benavidez up, and Johnson sends him back down with another takedown. Left lands by Johnson, who has controlled these first two minutes. Counter right by Johnson, who goes for - and gets - another takedown. Johnson moves into side control and grabs the head of Benavidez. Back to their feet with two minutes to go. Counter right by Johnson lands again, as he stuffs off Benavidez takedown. Right to the chin lands by Benavidez, his best strike of the round. Under a minute, and Benavidez seems a little annoyed by his inability to catch Johnson.
