UFC 150 Round-by-Round Review: Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway

Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway

We open up our pay-per-view main card with featherweights Justin Lawrence (4-0) and Max Holloway (5-1). Holloway, at 20 years old, is the youngest fighter in the UFC. The referee will be Josh Rosenthal.

Round 1: Lawrence starts off with an interesting kick that backs Holloway up. Holloway fires back with a kick to the face that just misses. Lawrence with a big overhand right that fails to connect, and Holloway lands a combo. Lawrence tries to catch Holloway coming in with a counter. Swooping left jab courtesy of Lawrence, and he catches a kick attempt from Holloway.

Quick jab to the face of Holloway, and Lawrence gets caught with a kick to the groin area. We will have a break for Lawrence to clear his thoughts. Lawrence with a small cut over his right eye, but he's good to continue. Spinning back kick by Lawrence misses, but has Holloway worried. Holloway catches Lawrence coming in with a quick jab, but Lawrence grabs a leg and gets a takedown. Holloway back to his feet and they square off. Blood starting to pour from Lawrence's face now, and it appears there are multiple lacerations. Holloway finding his groove, but Lawrence quick catches him off guard with a nice strike. Holloway throws a flying knee that catches Lawrence low, and this time, Lawrence isn't as gracious about it.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Holloway

Round 2: Side-kick by Lawrence lands. More kicks by Lawrence, and Holloway looks more tentative to start the round. Front-kick by Lawrence is followed up by a quick jab combo. Overhand right and a spinning back-fist combination move from Lawrence. Stiff left and a nice right land directly to chin/face of Lawrence by Holloway. These two seem very content with standing and trading, as Holloway stuffs a takedown attempt by Lawrence as soon as I write that. Lawrence with a solid uppercut hits the chin of Holloway. More nice combination work from Lawrence, throwing the overhand right and snapping a left jab off. Lawrence fires in, but his double-leg attempt is fended off by Holloway. Just over a minute to go and Holloway hurts Lawrence with a knee to the body. Exchange by the two, and Holloway lands a body shot that curls Lawrence up on the ground. Holloway pounces and finishes off Lawrence with several uncontested strikes.
