UFC 147: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 Needs to be Moved Due to U.N. Conference?

| by

UFC president Dana White revealed that an upcoming United Nations conference could change the planned date for UFC 147: Silva vs. Sonnen 2. The card, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was scheduled for June 23.

The United Nations event, also in Brazil, is set to take place June 20-22, making it very difficult to plan everything and work around such a short time-frame.

"A week forward, a week back - somewhere around there," said White, in an interview with following Saturday's press conference. "That's what we're trying to do."

The mayor of Rio is facing pressure to reschedule the UFC show with world leaders in town to work on a peace-focused meeting. Also, the number of hotel rooms would be limited with so many people travelling to the city for both events.

White did confirm that Joao Havelange Stadium will host the event regardless of when it takes place. That means we're likely to see a new record set for the UFC in terms of attendance for a card. The main event will see Anderson Silva defend his UFC middleweight title against No. 1 contender and public enemy No. 1 in Brazil, Chael Sonnen.
