UFC 147 Round-by-Round Review: Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva

Round 1: Both men looking to find their range, Franklin establishing his offense better early on. Silva throws a head kick that Franklin just barely catches; Silva makes him pay for it with a sequence of punches thrown while on one leg. Silva gets clipped with a left hand and briefly goes down. Franklin is putting his hands on Silva and backing him up. Franklin holding the center of the cage and controlling the action. Silva hanging in there and firing back. Franklin threatens the head kick just before the bell.

Round 2: Silva connects with a left hook to start the round. Silva is looking to counter here; he's doing well until he catches Franklin's knee with his foot on a leg kick. He falls to his back and may have injured it, but he's not limping at this point. Franklin with a nice right hand and a kick to the body. Franklin catches Silva against the cage briefly, but Silva plants his feet and fires back well. Franklin is in control here though, holding the center and picking Silva apart. Silva comes back with a one-two. Silva's best offense at this point are single shot counters. until now, when he comes after Franklin like a mad dog, nailing him with hard punches and knees. Silva has come alive; he drops Franklin to the mat with a hard right hand. Franklin is trying to mount offense from his back, he foes for a takedown. Ten seconds left and Silva is on top pounding away. Franklin barely survives the round.

Round 3: It's tentative in the early goings, both men throwing single shot attacks. Two minutes into the round and neither man has taken a clear edge, though Franklin is landing with a bit more frequency. Franklin is the more aggressive, but Silva is defending well. Franklin lands another hard body kick. Franklin steps inside behind a punch and takes Silva to the mat; he moves into half guard as the round closes. Franklin ends the round raining down blows.

Round 4: Silva looks a little more aggressive to start this round, throwing more than last round. Franklin is lighter on his feet in the fourth though, chipping away at Silva as The Axe Murderer hangs back. Silva must be tired, because his offense has been whittled away to about nothing. The most significant shot he's landed so far goes south. It's a bad one; Franklin needs awhile to recover, but he gets back to it. Franklin keeps up his offense as the fight restarts, the break doesn't seem to have aided Silva much. Franklin with another body kick. Silva counters with a right, but he's still getting picked apart.

Round 5: The two show each other respect before getting back to it. Just over three minutes to go and Franklin is working the outside, chipping away at Silva with technique. Franklin is moving very well, hanging his hands low and dogging Silva. Silva is moving forward and loading up for a strong finish. A minute to go and Silva is chasing him down, he manages to land a few power punches. He's egging Franklin on. Franklin's looking at the clock. Silva comes on strong at the end and they end brawling for the rest of the fight. Silva got dropped to a knee at the end of the round.
