MMA Quick Hit: Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson at UFC 144

| by

On paper, Benson Henderson is prime to strip Frankie Edgar of his UFC LW championship belt. Benson is considerably larger than Edgar. He’s got incredible takedown defence and scrambling ability. He’s dangerous in the clinch and has dynamic striking. He’s on a three fight win streak and has momentum on his side.

However, I’m not yet ready to concede that Edgar’s time atop the LW heap is done. While there are fighters in the LW division capable of taking his belt, I think Edgar will weather the storm that Benson will present.

Against Mark Bocek, Clay Guida and Jim Miller, Ben Henderson showed good takedown defence. However, good TD defence is not enough against Frankie Edgar. The spirited New Jersey fighter repeatedly took down BJ Penn in their rematch and also turned the tables on All-American wrestler Gray Maynard, stifling Maynard’s takedown attempts, landing some of his own, and using a front headlock position scramble to concuss ‘The Bully’.

Aside from perhaps GSP, Edgar has possibly the best MMA wrestling in the business. Benson will not be used to a fighter that darts in and out right in front of him with the speed and efficiency of Frankie Edgar. And Benson will not be used to being outworked for five rounds straight.
