With Strikeforce’s television deal with Showtime expiring in early 2012, Zuffa owner Lorenzo Fertitta commented on the state of of the organization in an interview with MMAWeekly.com.
“At the end of the day, Showtime is contracted to receive a product, and we’re going to keep giving it to them,” Fertitta said. “They want us to do the eight Strikeforce shows, the Challengers shows. We’re going to do no different than what we’ve been doing the last four or five months, since we owned the company; keep delivering great fights and keep that going as long as the contract says, and then, at that time, we’ll reevaluate.”
Let me translate that for you: Strikeforce is done, and has been done since we acquired it. We were only waiting for the contract to be up. We will not be extending it until 2014, as is our option.
MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Chael Sonnen will not be making a trip down to Brazil to corner Yushin Okami because Brazilian-based MMA brand Pretorian threatened to pull their sponsorship of Okami if Sonnen appeared in his corner. Sonnen stated, “I only want to be there to help him.I don’t need to see the show…I was going exclusively in support of Yushin, and frankly, it’s been headed this way for a long time. It’s been headed the direction of, ‘Hey, this is becoming a distraction.’”
This is a smart move, but one I didn’t think he’d make. But he sure did piss off an entire country. Maybe he feared for his safety.
Sherdog.com is reporting that Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki are close to signing on for a rematch, to take place in the Bellator cage.
Well it’s about time. I was wondering when these two would meet again. This time I have not doubt Alvarez defeats Aoki.
