MMA News: Michael Bisping is Ready for Primetime

| by

Michael Bisping has been saying lately that he wants a title shot and by stepping up to face the number one contender, Chael Sonnen, on short notice, he proved it.

Bisping meets Sonnen in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 2 this weekend, where he was originally scheduled to meet Demian Maia. Sonnen's original opponent Mark Muñoz's last-minute elbow injury opened the door for Bisping to step up and battle for contendership and the outspoken Brit leaped at the chance.

"Well, you know, for me, I'm always looking for the biggest fights possible. A fight with Demian was a very, very tough test and he's a hell of a fighter. When they offered Chael Sonnen, I jumped at the opportunity," said Bisping. "I wanna be involved in the biggest fights possible, as I said, and this is a bigger fight with bigger ramifications. Chael's widely regarded as probably number two in the division and people do say that I haven't been fighting the top guys. Well, here we are. Outside of the champion, this is the number two guy and I jumped at the opportunity. As I've said before, I'm in shape, I've got no injuries, I'm on weight - it's all there. If I win, fantastic; if I lose, I don't deserve a title shot anyway."

For his part, Sonnen is just as content to face Bisping, a fighter he's actually been defending against accusations of being overrated or undeserving of this position.

"Bisping says he wants a title shot and people try to say he doesn't deserve one and I'm sitting on my couch going, 'Well, he's beat up everybody they've put in front of him.' Well, then the big complaint is that he hasn't beat top ten guys. That's not up to him, he fights anybody they've ever ask him to fight. He fights big fights and he's never not a main event; if he's not the main event he's a co-main event every time and he gets his hand raised, time and time again," said Sonnen. "I don't know how you can deny a guy that continually goes out and wins. I'm not delusional. I'm a pretty smart guy - these guys, I've gotta compete against all of 'em - but Bisping gets the job done. For someone to come out and say that he shouldn't get the opportunity is silly. He should get his opportunity."

UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis goes down this Saturday from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. FightLine will be back on the night with our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
