MMA News: Junior dos Santos, Overeem vs. Lesnar, TV Ratings and More

Now that his title shot against Frankie Edgar has been booked for Japan in February 2012, Benson Henderson told MMAJunkie.com that he plans on upping his size advantage over the champion.

“I’m sure [Edgar] is used to it, but it’s definitely something I do want to take advantage of: my size. I want to get as big as possible, bulk up a little bit and do a good job of cutting weight, re-hydrating – do a very scientific job of that to be as big as possible, size-wise, shape-wise, to my advantage…I knew at some point in time I was hoping I would get a chance to face him. You could definitely say I was breaking down some film and watching him, seeing what I would do in this situation, what I would do in that situation.”

This is going to be a great fight, but I don’t know how much more size Henderson can put on. He always takes full advantage of the allotted 1 pound over rule. I would say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” but I’m not him or his coach. But as is, he’s been doing great and he already has a huge size advantage over Edgar. It will be interesting to see a “larger” Henderson if he does decide to go that route.

During a press conference for his upcoming fight with Alistair Overeem, Brock Lesnar talked about having surgery, and how he sees the fight going. “[It took] about six hours [after surgery to feel better]…I was just looking to feel better. I avoided the surgery for as long as I could. I made the decision; when you’ve got to go under the knife and have part of your intestines removed is a big deal. hindsight being 20/20 – I’m back and I feel good. I’m weighing about 278 [lbs.]. Sorry for the disappointment…Alistair’s done a lot of good things overseas. He’s had a lot of fights. It’s an honor for me to get in the Octagon to kick his ass.”

I really hope Lesnar is 100% healthy. That fact that he was able to compete in the UFC with that disease, and win, is amazing. And at 278lbs, he sure does seem to be healthy. This fight is going to be a great way to end the year. Overeem will have all he can handle come December 30.

According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, TUF 13 runner-up Ramsey Nijem is making a quick turnaround after his impressive victory over Danny Downes, and is taking on Anthony Njokuani at UFC 141.

This is an interesting fight for Nijem. He looked dominate over a smaller fighter, but Njokuani won’t be smaller. And he’s a fantastic striker. Better than TUF 13 winner Tony Ferguson, who knocked Nijem out.

Newly crowned UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos revealed during the post fight press conference that he tore his meniscus 11 days before the fight. The knee injury was serious enough that he couldn’t walk on it just two days later.

Well, I guess it’s a great thing that he won in the opening round, because if Velasquez started using leg kicks and takedowns, that knee wouldn’t have held up and that would’ve most likely cost Dos Santos the belt. That makes his victory even more impressive.

Despite early reports that UFC on Fox 1 only drew an average of 4.6 million viewers, updated numbers actually peg the event and a very impressive 5.7 million viewers, making it overall the most watched live MMA event in the sport’s history. That also makes it the most watched fight of any kind on network television since an Oscar De La Hoya Fight Night in 1998 that average 5.9 million viewers.

I don’t understand why someone would leak the lower number in the first place. To bash the UFC is my only guess, and if that is the case, this new number won’t make them happy. This was a huge success and I can’t wait for the next Fox show, which will have more fights.
