MMA News: Alistair Overeem, "Rampage" Jackson, ProElite and More

| by Sports Nickel

Alistair Overeem wrote in a Yahoo! blog that he believes he’s the best heavyweight on the planet, and that he’ll destroy Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.

“I think I have earned a UFC world title fight, by winning every major title outside the UFC, but I am here to prove that I am – without question – the best heavyweight on the planet. You don’t do that sitting on the sidelines or working out in the gym, you do that by fighting and beating the best available opposition in the biggest fights that can be made. Myself vs. Lesnar is a huge fight and I jumped at the chance to fight him. But I don’t underestimate this man. Winning UFC belt from Randy Couture in his fourth pro MMA fight and defending it against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin was very impressive. I am also impressed by Lesnar’s fighting spirit; he has twice come back from a very serious illness and fought very tough opposition right away…I will knock this guy out. He is great at takedowns and controlling people on the ground, but I can stop his takedowns and he is no match for me on the feet. I am going to rip Brock Lesnar apart, piece by piece.”

It’s a good thing he’s not taking Lesnar lightly. But I don’t think he’ll be able to stop Lesnar’s takedowns. He has to keep this standing, where he has a huge advantage. Once this fight hits the floor, if it hits the floor, Overeem will be in real trouble. I can’t honestly say he’ll be able to get up once, but I can say I can’t wait for this fight.

M-1 Global director of operations Evgeni Kogan took to Twitter and sent a tweet to UFC President Dana White, that said, “Fedor vs. Velasquez in 2012, let’s make this happen. Fedor is back, and a fight [with] Cain will prove it.” However, Kogan said that they wouldn’t be asking for the same added concessions they have in the past. M-1 simply wants to see this fight happen. “Not necessarily co-promotion. We just want to see this fight happen, that’s all. No craziness, no weird terms.” When someone asked “no co promotion, no stadium, no signed M-1 fighters. Just a Fedor contract?”, Kogan’s response was, “If that’s what it takes. It’s time for things to be put right.”

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

With Fedor, I’ve been “I’ll believe it when I see it.” But this sure does sound promising. I would like to see him in the UFC, but fighting Velasquez after defeating Jeff Monson seems a bit out of place. And I hope M-1 doesn’t think they will get the same huge deal the UFC offered the first time.

It seems that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is fighting in Japan after all. Jackson tweeted, “Guys, I have the best managers in the business. This thing will work its way out.” And then it was reported by ESPN.com that Jackson will take on Ryan Bader at UFC 144 on the February 26 card in Saitama, Japan.

Like I said before, I think Jackson just wanted on this card regardless of who he was fighting. And this fight with Bader is intriguing. If Bader stands with him, it probably won’t yeild a win for him. But can Bader really take Jackson down when Jon Jones had trouble accomplishing that? I don’t know. I don’t see this ending well for the TUF winner.

According to a report by MMAWeekly.com, a bout pitting Steve Cantwell against Riki Fukuda is being targeted for UFC 144 on for February 26 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

This is a very good fight, and both guys will probably be fighting for their UFC career. Cantwell is only 1-4 in the UFC, but he has been in every fight. He just seems to make a huge mistake that costs him.

Multiple reports are stating that ProElite has targeted January 21 for their third event, which is taking place at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. HDNet is expected to broadcast ProElite 3′s main card, which will feature a middleweight fight between Kendall Grove and Ikuhisa Minowa.

Looks like everything is well in the revival of ProElite. This middleweight fight is a great one too. I would imagine Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia will be on this card in some capacity. Maybe a Part 4?
