MMA Analysis: Bellator 48 Preview

| by

The inaugural Bellator Summer Series comes to a conclusion this Saturday from the familiar confines of the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The three event series featured a featherweight tournament that is set to conclude, along with a handful of special attraction bouts. Bellator 48 will send the Summer Series out in style with the featherweight tournament final and three special attraction bouts.

It all starts off with the un-aired five bout local feature card to get the fans in attendance primed and ready to go. Notable names on the “undercard” are light heavyweight Nik Fekete and middleweight Dan Cramer. Fekete was last seen in the Bellator season four tournament being submitted by Richard Hale via an inverted triangle. Kramer was a participant in the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter and went 1-1 in the UFC. He has since gone 4-0 in Bellator and is 6-1 overall since being released from the UFC.

The night’s main card, which will be aired on MT2 will kick off in the lightweight division as the undefeated Brazilian Rene Nazare takes on Juan Barrantes. Nazare will be making his third appearance in the Bellator cage, while Barrantes will be making his promotional debut.

The middle of the main card features two heavyweight bouts featuring three former UFC fighters and the current Bellator heavyweight champion. Former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez brings his 12 fight win streak into his bout with Ultimate Fighter season 2 fighter, Seth Petruzelli. Rodriguez as looking to get back into the big show and a win over Petruzelli would make 13 in a row and two of his last three coming against former UFC fighters. Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad and Paul Buentello will finally meet after their first bout was pushed back due to injury. With only seven professional bouts, defeating Buentello would be a nice win for the champion but a win by the MMA veteran would be even bigger.

Closing out the main card is the featherweight tournament final between season two lightweight tournament winner Pat Curran taking on Marlon Sandro. The winner will be crowned the Summer Series featherweight tournament champion and get in line behind Patricio Freire for a shot at Joe Warren and his featherweight title. Both fighters are coming off impressive unanimous decision wins in the semifinals and their bout on Saturday should be a classic Bellator featherweight fight. One that fittingly ends the Summer Series while preparing MMA fans for the upcoming fifth season.
