Juan Manuel Marquez has yet to acknowledge that he will fight Manny Pacquiao in 2013, but all signs are pointing in that direction. When we last heard from Marquez, he insisted that his boxing status was up entirely to his wife. If she thought he should retire – he would. If she permitted him to take on his arch rival one final time – he would be open to that, too.
While Mrs. Marquez has yet to reveal what her final decision is, everyone from Pacquiao’s camp seems to believe that their guy will get a chance to redeem himself for this past December’s embarrassment. The time table for Pacquiao’s return varies, mostly for health reasons, but the end result is always the same – he won’t hang up his gloves.
You will recall, just a few weeks ago Bob Arum came out and publicly insisted that a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez was imminent. No contingencies; no fallbacks. "We're gonna, I think, do another fight with Juan Manuel Marquez,” the Top Rank boss told reporters.
He wasn’t the lone member of Team Pacquiao singing that tune, though. Recently, the Filipino star’s advisor, Rex “Wakee” Salud, spoke with the Manila Bulletin regarding what the future holds.
“When he returns in September, he must win his fight. That’s all. At 34, I believe he can still fight. He needs to prepare very well this year,” Salud told The Manila Times in a telephone interview.
“That would be absolutely good [if he wins].”
When he returns is the key phrase there. Notice, there was nothing alluding to Marquez-- or his wife -- being a stumbling block in a potential fifth bout.
Barring a horrific turn of events as it pertains to Pacquiao’s health, this thing will likely come together in September of next year like everyone is saying.
