The great thing about listening to a Manny Pacquiao interview is that he, unlike Floyd Mayweather Jr., doesn’t talk in circles. There are no contradictions, no unanswered questions when the Filipino champion speaks – just responses to whatever inquiring minds what to know.
Recently, FightHubTV got a chance to speak with Pacquiao on assortment of issues (video below) including, but not limited to: his legacy, the chance that he’ll ever fight Mayweather and his health. The responses he offered up seemed very genuine and truthful.
On his legacy, Pacquiao said that he tried not to compare himself to the greats in boxing like Muhammad Ali and the rest. Although this is sort of a company line when it comes to athletes, he sounded like someone who was confident in his place in boxing lore and realized that at this point everything else was out of his control. He’s fighting in a period of his sport’s history where the competition just isn’t what it used to be, but at the same time, he’s more or less seeking out the best fighters that he can.
As always, talk eventually turned to the potential superfight between he and Mayweather, and the likelihood of it occurring. Pacquiao replied that it depended on his counterpart more than himself, and that he wasn’t ruling it out. At this point, it’s hard to read either of these guys when it comes to this supposedly inevitable superfight because there is so much gamesmanship involved. Pacquiao thinks Mayweather is waiting for him to get old. I’m apprehensive towards that theory because frankly, every day that Pacquiao ages and slows down, Mayweather ages and slows down as well.
And finally, Pacquiao touched on his health. He acknowledged that he is getting older, but still maintains that he’s at the top of his game. It’s hard to get an accurate read on the Filipino champ’s health if for no other reason than in his last bout versus Shane Mosley, there wasn’t much for him to do (what with Mosley cowering and running away so much).
