Manny Pacquiao and Michael Koncz have a long history of contradicting one another, and they did it once again this week in two separate interviews. While speaking about when they are looking to hold their next bout, the pair somehow managed to offer two completely separate dates, and do so with apparent certainty that what they were saying was absolutely true.
You will recall, a couple of weeks after Pacquiao’s brutal defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez, rumors began to surface that he might be eying an April 2013 return. This made little sense given his lack of medical clearance to train and just the general fact he needed rest after back-to-back losses, but that was the idea being peddled by somebody in his camp. Since then, numerous sources have pointed to Koncz as that somebody. Aside from him, nobody wanted Pacquiao to rush back as soon as April.
With that in mind, the contradicting messages we got this week about Pacquiao’s future should also be taken with a grain of salt.
During an interview with the Manila Standard, Pacquiao said this regarding when he is coming back:
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
“Tell them to be patient. Bob Arum and myself have been talking and will continue talking. What is definite is they’ll see me fight again come September. Not April nor immediately after that as speculations are going. Tell the public that it won’t be long before I make them happy again when I fight.”
Meanwhile, during a different interview this week, Koncz indicated that October was also a viable option for Pacquiao’s return. As we noted earlier in the week:
According to Koncz, if his team isn’t able to lock down the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel for a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez, they’ll scrap that as a possible venue and look elsewhere. While that’s an interesting new development, it wasn’t the biggest bomb Koncz dropped during his interview. No, the biggest bomb was him saying that Pacquiao could return in ‘September or October.’ Up until now, everyone -- including Pacquiao himself -- said that September was the target return date.
Now, for what it’s worth: Marquez has said that he wants to fight again in September. And seeing as he is most likely going to be Pacquiao’s next opponent, him wanting a particular date means something. Plus, Pacquiao himself said that September is the target date. Basically, the only person who thinks October is a possibility is Koncz.

Still, it’s sort of funny that Pacquiao and his closest advisors, after all these years, still can’t get on the same page about anything.
