Manny Pacquiao Challenges Floyd Mayweather to a Fight

The media often gets blamed for stirring up talks about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. There is probably some truth to the fact that folks in the press love to harp on it more than necessary. However, it’s not like they’re doing it randomly, for no reason at all. The media responds to what the public demands, and for the last four years, the public has demanded a super fight between boxing’s two most recognizable stars.

In recent times, one of those two stars has faded somewhat. Pacquiao is coming off consecutive losses, and Mayweather has indicated that he doesn’t believe they’re in the same league anymore. Thus, no super fight, right?

Wrong.

Over the past few weeks, both camps have made it a point to speak out about the other. You will recall, while doing press for his upcoming bout against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Mayweather referred to his rival as a ‘has-been’ who isn’t worth giving a shot to. In response to that comment, Pacquiao’s advisor, Michael Koncz, came out and said that if Mayweather truly felt that way, he should man up and commit to a super fight.

Now, Pacquiao himself is jumping into the fray.

"For us, Mayweather is cocky, boastful," he told Ring.

"I can prove to him I can still win. I lost to Marquez but it's just a lucky punch, just part of the game. I was not dominated. If he wants to fight, let's fight."

It’s a nice thought, but Pacquiao should probably focus on Brandon Rios first. The fact of the matter is, Mayweather is going to be there in 2014 no matter what. Win, lose or draw against Alvarez, he has a lengthy deal with Showtime to finish out. The same can’t be said for Pacquiao, who promised Freddie Roach he’d retire if got knocked out a second consecutive time.

Everything is lined up for Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2014, but only if the latter part of that equation lives up to his end of the bargain. Will he? We’ll find out soon enough.
