Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have a tradition. Despite the fact that both men have spent the last three years shirking each other’s offers for a potential super fight, whenever they have a match coming up, they always exploit the idea of a super fight for the sake of squeezing out just a little bit extra publicity.
And that’s not an exaggeration, by the way, it really is just a little bit of extra publicity. For one thing, nobody believes them anymore. More importantly, though, they’re the only two stars in boxing fans actually recognize. Whenever they have a bout coming up, it’s one of the biggest events in sports. They don’t need to exploit fans like this, but they opt to do it anyway.
While doing press for his upcoming November showdown against Brandon Rios, Pacquiao was, once again, asked about Mayweather. Instead of offering a simple no comment, the Filipino star gave folks exactly what they wanted. He called his arch rival out.

Now, it’s worth noting: Mayweather does the same exact thing. He name-drops Pacquiao to steal headlines like Pacquiao name-dropped him to steal headlines. But two wrongs don’t make it any less a cheap trick.
It’s still very likely that Pacquiao and Mayweather will fight in 2014. The stars are aligning sort of perfectly for that. However, until they sign on the dotted line and someone publishes a copy of the contract online, it’d be ideal if these kids would stop playing this game.
