Gray Maynard is Hungry for a Title Shot

| by

In case you didn't notice, Gray Maynard did not get the kind of fight he wanted despite picking up the split decision at last night's main event at UFC on FX 4.

After unsuccessfully chasing Clay Guida for two rounds, Maynard decided to do everything he could to engage his opponent. True to his name, "The Bully" shouted, dropped his hands and even flipped off Guida for good measure. It is the sort of fighting style we expect from a Diaz brother, but not the former Ohio State wrestler.

Fightline caught up with Maynard after the fight to hear how emotions played into the contest.

"The first two rounds it was odd I guess and threw me off. It took me some time to know, hey this might be the whole fight and I had to pull it together as far as MMA wise. But you know, it is what it is and I let my emotions get a hold of me," Maynard told FightLine.com. "It did get a little heated. He's a nice guy but I was mad in the fight."

Despite the frustration, Maynard did enough to convince the judges who awarded him for bringing the fight to Guida. It was not an incredibly convincing victory, but crucial for a lightweight coming off a loss to Frankie Edgar for the title.

In a stacked division, Maynard will likely need a few more wins if he wants another shot but that does not mean he is not hungry for one.

"What's next? Of course I'm going for the belt. The quickest way to the belt," he said.
