Gilbert Melendez Will Put His Lightweight Title on the Line vs. Pat Healy

| by

Gilbert Melendez will return to the Strikeforce cage in September, defending his Strikeforce lightweight title against Pat Healy. Showtime officials confirmed the bout via Twitter on Wednesday.

The bout will headline the September 29 Showtime card from Sacramento, California. Melendez also made news of the fight being signed on Twitter.

"It's official," Melendez posted. "I will be defending my title sept. 29 in Sacramento Ca. against Pat Healy. Game on!"

Melendez (21-2) has won seven consecutive fights and will be seeking his fifth successful title defense against Healy. "El Nino" topped Josh Thomson earlier this year.

Healy (28-16) is a veteran of the sport, having gone 6-1 in seven Strikeforce fights. He made a plea to face Melendez earlier this month after defeating Mizuto Hirota. He has won five-straight fights.

Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy will also feature Daniel Cormier competing in the final heavyweight fight under the Strikeforce banner. No opponent has been confirmed for Cormier yet.
