Ex-Boxing Champ Corrie Sanders Killed by Robbers

| by Alex Groberman

Corrie Sanders, the man who earned a monumental upset victory over Wladimir Klitschko almost a decade ago, died early Sunday after being shot during a robbery.

While police are still piecing together what specifically happened, here is what they’re saying at the moment (via ESPN): robbers invaded the restaurant -- in South Africa -- at which Sanders and his family were celebrating a 21st birthday. At the some point during the attempted robbery, the ex-heavyweight champ wound up getting shot. He was transported to a hospital early Sunday morning, however, he died shortly thereafter.

Sanders achieved international notoriety nearly 10 years ago when he took the heavyweight belt from Klitschko back in 2003.

He would later fight and lose to Vitali Klitschko in 2004.

When it was all said and done, Sanders finished his career with 42 wins and four loses. Thirty one of his victories came by knockout.

He was 46 years old.
