Does Floyd Mayweather Need Manny Pacquiao or Vice Versa?

| by Alex Groberman

Although there has been some recent rumbling regarding Manny Pacquiao’s financial stability, all of the experts seem to agree: Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs Pacquiao far more than the Filipino superstar needs him.

During a recent interview with FightHype, ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas -- who has been anything but kind to Pacquiao in the past -- acknowledged that Mayweather’s out-of-the-ring problems are getting to be a bit too costly.

Further, he also went so far as to admit that Pacquiao’s relative stability over the last few years without all of the unnecessary drama that Mayweather seems to bring upon himself and those around him means that despite notions to the contrary, he is set financially.

“Pacquiao has made so much money, and I mean, Mayweather has made a lot of money too, but Pacquiao has probably made even more with his recent activities,” Atlas said.

Atlas also described Pacquiao as someone that could generate paydays fighting nobodies, something he’s not as confident that Mayweather can do.

“(Mayweather's), not quite to that level (yet),“ he said. “So for Mayweather to really cash out, if you want to look at it that way, [the fight] has to be with a Pacquiao.”

Again, criticizing the way Mayweather handles himself is nothing new. All boxing observers have been rubbed the wrong way by at least something the fighter has done over the last two years. The far more gripping part of the whole equation is that it’s Atlas who is making these comments, a guy who has a renowned history of calling it like he sees it with Pacquiao.

How true are his statements? It’s hard to say. On one hand, Pacquiao has been collecting massive paydays and slowly accumulating power despite the fact that he has fought a number of opponents who aren’t particularly enthralling. On the other hand, Mayweather seems to pop in and out of his little sabbaticals every few years and still draw big PPV totals every single time out.

So, to answer the original question: who needs who more between Mayweather and Pacquiao may ultimately come down to the PPV numbers of the pair’s upcoming September and November fights against Victor Ortiz and Juan Manuel Marquez respectively.
