Daniel Geale Hands Felix Sturm His First Loss in 6 Years

| by

Felix Sturm suffered a first defeat in six years as he surrendered his WBA middleweight title to Australian Daniel Geale in Germany.

In an entertaining battle, Sturm started and finished well but gave away too many rounds in the middle of the fight as Geale’s industry and accuracy took over, condemning the German to an odd split decision.

Each judge scored the fight 116-112- two for Geale and one for Sturm- however most ringside experts had the bout extremely close- one or two rounds either way.

In any case Sturm, who was fortunate to cling onto his belt through his 2011 battles with Martin Murray and Matthew Macklin, could have few complaints.

The 33-year-old looked massive at middleweight and may now contemplate a move up a weight class- a fight with newly crowned WBO super-middleweight kind Arthur Abraham would make financial sense in Germany.

For Geale the fight capped what has been a difficult sporting summer for Australia, however the 31-year-old will be a man in demand with a number of European names keen for a crack at the new king.
