Jake Ellenberger won his sixth straight two nights ago, taking a hard-fought unanimous decision over Diego Sanchez. The man holding the interim welterweight strap right now, Carlos Condit, is actually the last man whom Ellenberger lost to, the two fighting to a controversial split decision back in 2009 in what was Ellenberger's UFC debut.
As such, many have suggested that Ellenberger face Condit for the interim strap before reigning champion Georges St-Pierre returns from injury. Speaking with Ariel Helwani for Fuel TV post-fight, UFC president Dana White said that Condit would likely only step in the cage before GSP's return to fight Nick Diaz, the man whom he battled to a controversial decision back at UFC 143 to claim the interim title.
White doesn't blame him for that approach, but won't be surprised if The Natural Born Killer gets antsy to fight some of the emerging top welterweights before GSP heals up.
"I think that, if I'm Carlos Condit and the (Nick) Diaz match is available, I take the Diaz match. If not, I probably sit around and I wait for GSP," said White. "It makes all the sense in the world. He just came off a split decision against Ellenberger. He knows if he beats GSP, he's gonna end up facing Ellenberger again. But, we also have on the May 5 card on Fox, we have (Josh) Koscheck fighting (Johny) Hendricks. So, we'll see what happens.

"He didn't want to wait if he could have fought Diaz. He wanted the Diaz fight. It's the night of the fight, Carlos is sitting at home right now. Carlos might be sitting around, three months from now, he might have a different opinion."
