Victor Ortiz endured a second successive defeat as Josesito Lopez secured the WBC silver welterweight title and shattered the American’s hopes of a money-spinning fight with Saul Alvarez in the process.
Ortiz called an end to the fight before the start of the tenth round, citing a broken jaw suffered during the fifth session of the night, and despite receiving encouragement from his corner to continue.
At the time of the stoppage Ortiz was narrowly ahead on all three scorecards, however he had been badly shaken up by Lopez, a man not expected to pose many problems after coming in as a late replacement for Andre Berto.
Ortiz (29-4-2) shot to mainstream attention during his controversial defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr last September however the 25-year-old yet again failed to cover himself in glory as he was afforded a chance to establish himself as an elite level welterweight.
For Lopez (30-4) the victory could be a springboard to marquee fights in the future with a September date with unbeaten Alvarez a possibility:
“I’m a man and I’m not intimidated by anything. Victor tried to intimidate me but it didn’t work. Victor has no heart. … I knew the longer the fight went, the better chance I had. I chopped him down. I told you that I would shock the world.”
