With the hunt for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev seemingly reaching its final stages, folks are now stepping back and wondering what made him and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, do what they allegedly did.

According to various bits and pieces of information that have been found online, Tamerlan was apparently a boxer and did a bit of martial growing up. Most of his ties to boxing can be seen in this “Will Box for Passport” gallery, with the captions perhaps offering a bit of insight into his psyche. One of the captions, as noted by Larry Brown Sports, reads: “I don’t have a single friend in America, I don’t understand them.”

Additional sleuth work by Deadspin revealed that Tamerlan was part of a club known as Team Lowell and won the New England Golden Gloves heavyweight championship in 2010. He boxed in America for nearly ten years, and appears to have won a small scholarship in 2011. His photos also make references to the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center where he previously worked out.

At one point, Tamerlan expressed interest in boxing for the U.S. Olympic team.
