Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar: UFC 150 Round-by-Round Review

We have reached our main event for the evening, as Benson Henderson (16-2) makes his first UFC lightweight title defense against the man he won the belt from, Frankie Edgar (14-2-1). The referee will be Herb Dean.

Round 1: Edgar takes the Octagon right away, throwing a nice, big kick to start. Lot of feeling out early, with both men throwing several combos that just miss. Henderson with a leg kick that lands, moving out of the way of a right by Edgar. Leg kick nearly sweeps feet out from under Edgar, as the lead-leg is a key area for Henderson. Edgar with a counter-right that connects. This time, Henderson sweeps the leg out and attacks, working for control but Edgar grabs a foot and Henderson stands back up, avoiding a kick on the way up. Lead-leg of Edgar, especially his calf, is swelling already and is red. The two exchange quick combos, testing out the distance again. Edgar tries to catch a knee to the body but is unable to avoid damage. Edgar with a kick that lands. Down to 30 seconds and Edgar catches a leg and gets the takedown, but Henderson locks in a guillotine choke and is pulling hard, locking his legs around the body of Edgar but the clock expires.

Round 2: Edgar with a nice strike-kick combo to start the round. Henderson with another kick that sweeps Edgar and drops him, but the former champ bounces back up quickly. Edgar catches leg and lands some kicks to Henderson as he balances himself. Henderson again kicks the lead leg, damaging the calf even more. Edgar catches Henderson with an uppercut that floors Henderson and goes to lock in a front-choke. Edgar looking for a choke, but Henderson powers out. Edgar pounces back on the choke with two minutes to go in the round. Edgar remains on the neck, cranking and looking for the submission. Henderson survives and gets out, as blood is pouring from face of Edgar now. Front-kick by Henderson, who shifts his stance again to utilize his legs. Edgar again with the neck, but Henderson drops to avoid a potential knee shot.

Round 3: Glancing blow with a head-kick by Henderson. Another kick by Henderson. Uppercut by Henderson following a knee to the body that lands. The two exchange leg kicks, and Henderson lands a side jab to the chin. Edgar with a kick to the body, and blocks a head kick by Henderson. Body shot on a wild hook by Henderson. Under two minutes to go, and either fighter could steal this important third round. Edgar with a hard leg kick, and another kick combo. Henderson gets two kicks caught, and Edgar lands a stiff jab when doing so each time. Stiff kick by Henderson to the leg of Edgar. Down to 20 seconds, and Edgar lands a body shot.

Round 4: Henderson comes out more aggressive this round, landing nice strikes and kicks to the lead-leg again. Henderson lands a stiff jab to the chin. Edgar gets a takedown, but Henderson throws a head kick from the bottom that glances off the head of Edgar, who goes for a choke. Edgar powering Henderson to the ground, looking to lock the choke in. Swinging left hook misses from Henderson. Edgar loses his mouthpiece, and puts it right back in, and we return to action with 90 seconds to go. Nice right by Henderson is met by one from Edgar, and a leg kick courtesy Edgar. Henderson starting to taunt Edgar a little, wants to mix it up more. Big right hand by Edgar lands, and he catches a leg kick.

Round 5: We come to the final five minutes, and both corners tell each fighter this is a close fight. Right by Edgar connects on the chin. Edgar pushes Henderson back and he falls, but Henderson gets right back to his feet. Body punch and a right connect from Edgar. So far this round, Edgar is the aggressor, coming in and landing on Henderson at will. Henderson seems frustrated, as Edgar is catching his kicks now. Just over two minutes to go, and Henderson lands a nice left. Another counter-right connects by Edgar, and he fends off a takedown attempt. Leg kick by Edgar sweeps Henderson off his feet. A minute to go, and Henderson gets his kick caught again. Left lands by Henderson, as Edgar's head goes back. Thirty seconds to go in this 10th round overall and Edgar lands a nice combo that might seal the deal. Head-kick misses by Edgar and he slips, but Henderson unable to capitalize.
