Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen: Biggest Box Office Stars Around

| by

UFC 148 was expected to be the biggest fight card of the year and even though the event did not live up to expectations, it did draw the biggest box office numbers of any stateside event the promotion has put on. UFC 148 raked in an amazing $6,901,655 live gate, thanks to 15,104 fans in attendance.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released those numbers by email late Tuesday afternoon.

UFC 148 went down on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. In the main event Anderson Silva defended his middleweight championship by TKO’ing Chael Sonnen in the second round. This was Silva’s 10th title defense and improved his record inside the octagon to an impressive 15-0.

According to the NSAC there were only 64 tickets unsold to the event and an amazing 13,606 sold. The UFC comp’d 1,498 of those tickets which brought the official number of attendance as stated above to 15,104.

The previous gate record was set back in 2006 when UFC 66 had 13,761 in attendance and brought home a $5,397,300 live gate. The event featured a main event between then light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell against Tito Ortiz. The two had one of the biggest rivalries in UFC history.
