Is Anderson Silva Avoiding Chris Weidman?

| by

UFC middleweight contender Chris Weidman feels like UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is ducking him. Weidman, during a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, said he turned down a fight with Vitor Belfort because he believed a future meeting with Silva would come about.

Weidman went on to ask for his shot at "The Spider." In recent weeks, members of Silva's management team have said that Weidman is not a deserving contender, and that Silva wouldn't fight him. Well, now Ed Soares, the manager for Silva, is further explaining what that all means.

"At the end of the day, whoever the UFC puts in front of us, we've never turned down a fight," said Soares, while appearing on Sirius XM Sports radio recently. "Not only Anderson, but none of our fighters have ever turned down a fight."

Soares did say that Silva is becoming more involved in the decision making because, "the middleweight division right now, it's kind of a little bit murky because the guys who are out there earning their shots aren't very potentially big fights."

Silva's most recent bout set several records, but that had as much to do with the champion as who he was face: Chael Sonnen. In the months leading up to the rematch, Sonnen went out of his way to provoke a different side of Silva than we are used to seeing.

"There's just not a huge amount of fights right now," Soares said. "I think we need the dust to settle a little bit, let Anderson let his body rest; he's not a young guy anymore, he's 37 years old and wants to take some time between fights."

While Weidman is currently without an opponent, other middleweight contenders are lined up to square off. Michael Bisping will face Brian Stann in September and Vitor Belfort battles Alan Belcher in October.
