Alistair Overeem Charged with Misdemeanor Battery

| by

The legal woes continue to pile up for Alistair Overeem, as it is being reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal that the UFC's current number one heavyweight contender has been charged with a single count of misdemeanor battery.

The charge stems from an alleged incident which took place on New Year's Eve weekend (January 2nd) at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel at approximately 3 a.m. Overeem has been accused of pushing a woman's face and causing her to stumble backward.

The Dutchman was not arrested in relation to the incident, but has been summoned to court on February 21, where he faces up to six months in jail and $1,000 fine should he be found guilty.

Overeem has employed an attorney and intends to prove his innocence in the matter.

The former Strikeforce heavyweight champion was in Las Vegas at the time the alleged incident occurred because he had fought Brock Lesnar at the MGM Grand in the main event of UFC 141 the Friday night prior and had decided to stay there to ring in the New Year.

Overeem has been involved in night club incidents before, such as the 2009 incident in which he and his brother Valentine left five overzealous bouncers hospitalized, nearly losing his hand to infection as a result, or the time he was hit in the face with a bottle as an adolescent, leaving him with the facial scars he sports now.

The 31-year-old Overeem has been in and out of court lately due to back and forth litigation with his longtime former training and management team Golden Glory over contractual issues relating to Overeem's departure from the team last year.
