Alexander Gustafsson: "I Want to Fight for the Title"

| by

Alexander Gustafsson served notice to the rest of the UFC's light heavyweight division that he is a major player. Gustafsson used his length to claim a decision victory over former UFC champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC On Fox: Henderson Vs. Diaz Saturday night.

Gustafsson, however, was less-than-impressed with his own performance. The Swede has now won six consecutive bouts since a submission loss to Phil Davis in 2010.

"I have mixed feelings," said Gustafsson, on the Fuel TV post-fight show. "I'm a striker and an MMA fighter. My hands weren't there. It was a good fight. I was prepared for the toughest guy and got that in 'Shogun.' He brought everything to the table."

Gustafsson did say that he believes he is ready for a match with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones or Chael Sonnen. The two meet in April following their stint as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter.

"I want to fight for the title," Gustafsson said. "I'll take the fight the UFC gives me - either Jon Jones or Chael Sonnen."

UFC president Dana White said that Gustafsson proved he is the top contender, but that he hoped the young fighter would take another bout while waiting, as it could be several months before he is open to fighting for the title.
