NFL: Cowboys Have Open Competition for Starting Quarterback?

| by Off The Record

Dallas Cowboys backup TE Martellus Bennett has never been one to shy away from doing and saying things that get him attention. Don’t dare him to offer up his opinion on women farting, because he’ll gladly tell you.

Today, he went on ESPN 103.3′s Ben & Skin Show, and said how much he loves Jon Kitna and thinks that there should be an open competition at QB between him and Tony Romo.

“I loved playing with Kitna,” Bennett said. “Kitna is one of my favorite people to play with. Just being out there on the field with that guy just makes you play even harder. He made some things happen in limited time, so I think if he got a longer chance, he’d be able to do more. I hope there’s a chance for a quarterback competition this year. Every position, I think we need to put more competition into it.”

I’m not so sure that a former second-round pick who hasn’t lived up to expectations really has the juice within the organization to be saying things like that. You think Romo didn’t get you the ball before? And you’d rather have a rag-armed 39-year old QB who has never done much as a starter in the NFL over Romo?

Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas also thinks that this notion is ridiculous.

“That’s like saying the Cowboys should open up the competition at outside linebacker for the job currently held by DeMarcus Ware,” said Watkins.

That pretty much sums it up. Don’t worry though, Martellus. I doubt you’ll be in Dallas for much longer.
