A video (below) showing police officers making a lesbian leave a women's bathroom because they did not believe she was a woman has captured international attention.

The recording, posted on Facebook on April 19 by blogger Tamara McDaniel, shows police officers initially asking the woman for identification while she waits in line to use the restroom.

It is unclear where the incident took place, but reports indicate it happened somewhere in the U.S.

Others in the restroom try to convince the officers the unidentified woman is a female, shouting “she’s a girl!”

Police officers refuse to believe them and escort the woman out of the restroom.

“A lesbian was harassed and forced to leave a public restroom because the police insist she's a man," said McDaniel. "Is this what ‘Make America Great Again’ means?”

McDaniel then made reference to a new North Carolina law that mandates transgender people use a bathroom based on the sex on their birth certificates.

“This makes me very sad and I want no part of this irrational fear. I mean, can't you think of a 1,000 ways these laws will be used as an excuse to harass, humiliate, and arrest people?” she added.

One transgender individual responded to the video with outrage, also mentioning the North Carolina law.

“So I'm transgender and I don't have an ID,” Facebook user Chris wrote. “So if I went to North Carolina and decided to follow their new law saying I would have to use the woman's restroom, this would happen to me or worse. Why can't people f------ pee in peace? Since when do we need laws to dictate what bathroom we use?”

While many social media users were angry, some said they could understand arguments against transgender people being able to choose which bathroom to use.

“In all respect, there has to be a way to determine sex either way. Otherwise, there should just be giant 'everyone' bathrooms. No men/women/trans horseplay. All this does is shake people’s feathers and cause controversy,” Brandon Skeen wrote.

It’s not the first time someone has forced a woman out of a bathroom because they thought she was a man.

In June 2015, cisgender Michigan woman Cortney Bogorad took Detroit restaurant Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe to court, Detroit Free Press reports, after a presumed employee injured the woman when he allegedly threw her out of the restaurant.
