A kind, simple gesture at a grocery store around Christmastime inspired a Georgia man to pay it forward in a big way (video below).

In December 2015, Smyrna, Georgia, resident Tracy Warshal was in line at the grocery store when she noticed the man behind her had forgotten his wallet. She decided to save the man some trouble and pay for his $7 worth of groceries.

“It would have been more of a headache for him to go out and find his wallet,” Warshal told ABC News.

Warshal said that “anybody would have done it” and called her actions "instinctual," but the small act of kindness left quite the impression on the man she helped. He asked for her name, so she gave him her first name only and wished him a “Merry Christmas” before leaving the store.

Then weeks later, in January, Warshal was visited at work by two representatives from The Piedmont Foundation. They informed her that the man she helped wanted to make a $10,000 donation to their organization in her name.

Warshal works at the Piedmont Cancer Institute and was wearing a shirt that said “Piedmont” at the grocery store on that December day.

The man reportedly reached out to Mendal Bouknight, the Vice President of Philanthropy at Piedmont Healthcare in an effort to track down Warshal and thank her.

“Tracy is an angel and proof that kindness and compassion are always inside you,” Bouknight said.

Warshal said she has not spoken to the man since the she covered his groceries. She was told by the foundation that he asked for his donation to remain anonymous.

“I would like to give him a hug and say 'thank you,'” Warshal said.

According to Amanda Bartlett, the Public Relations Manager of Piedmont Healthcare, the donation will go to Dana G. Smith Cancer Assistance Endowment. Bartlett said the man has made major contributions to Piedmont in the past.
