Woman Runs Out Into Street Engulfed in Flames, Dies at Scene

| by Dominic Kelly

An 18-year-old woman died after becoming engulfed in flames and running into the street, screaming, outside of the home where she was living.

Reports say on Saturday morning, neighbors called police to inform them that a woman was in the street, on fire, and screaming at the top of her lungs. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they attempted to extinguish the flames, but were unsuccessful. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said they heard “blood-curdling” screams before the woman, now identified as Rachel Osei, fell to the ground.

"I heard initially what I thought was a fox making a noise or an animal in pain," said neighbor Layla Hamid. "I heard four separate screams - the first one right outside the house and then more screams in the road and then behind me on the level crossing. Now that I know what it was, I feel chilled to the bone. She must have been in so much pain."

Osei was a promising physical education student and mother of a three-year-old son. Family members say they are devastated by her tragic death.

"Rachel was at university training to be a sports teacher," said Osei’s father Jonathan. "She wanted to do well and provide for her son. When I heard about the fire I tried to call her on her mobile phone but there was no answer. I tried to protect her but I could not. I loved Rachel, she was a lovely, lovely daughter. I named her after my mother. I had four children, but now I have only three."

Osei lived in a housing community for young mothers in London. Reports maintain that the woman’s son was staying with relatives at the time of the incident. The initial police investigation has not uncovered any signs of foul play, and police say that the death is currently being labeled unexplained.
