On Nov. 12, a woman who pretended to be a man in order to trick her female friend into having sex with her was sentenced to eight years in jail.

Gayle Newland, 25, disguised herself by wrapping her chest with bandages and wearing a prosthetic penis, the Liverpool Echo reports. Newland had convinced the woman, also 25, to use a blindfold during sex, which happened about 10 times before the woman ripped off the blindfold in June 2013 and saw Newland wearing a prosthetic penis.

Newland had also created a fake Facebook account in the name of Kye Fortune and mimicked a man’s voice over the phone when she and the victim talked, Mirror.co.uk reported. Their relationship began in 2011, and Newland asked the victim to wear a blindfold while they watched TV and did other activities together, claiming that "he" was sensitive about "his" looks after a life-saving surgery.

“You were so convincing in your cruel deception of [the victim] she thought she had finally found a man she could love and be with,” Judge Roger Dutton told Newland in court on Nov. 12, according to Mirror.co.uk.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Dutton added that Newland had acted on her own sexual gratification and ignored the “devastating” effect it had on her victim. He also noted that the crime was extremely unusual.

Newland said that the victim knew she was pretending to be a man and that the woman was struggling with her sexuality.

In September, a court convicted Newland of three counts of sexual assault at the victim’s apartment.

After her sentencing, Newland cried uncontrollably and had to be physically carried to the cells where her shouts could still be heard from the court room.
