Days after his beloved wife passed away, a Mississippi man discovered a touching note she left for him to find when she was gone, and now, thanks to their journalist grandson, the note has reached millions of people.

James Breland reportedly found the note written by his late wife of 60 years tucked away in her checkbook just days after she died. Cliff Sims, an Alabama journalist and grandson of James and now-deceased Billie Breland, decided that he would share the note and write a piece about it for Yellowhammer News.

“Last week I got a late night phone call informing me that my grandmother — my Mimi, Billie Breland — had passed away at the age of 83. Although her short-term memory had been fading in recent years, she was still in good health overall. She even still enjoyed cutting the grass and raking leaves,” Sims wrote.

Sims went on to explain that after a recent fall, his grandmother Billie broke a hip and never fully recovered. The entire time, however, her loving husband James was by her side.

“Every day my Grandaddy stayed by her side in the hospital taking care of her, just as he’d done for every one of the 60 years they’d been married — right up until the night she passed,” Sims continued.

It wasn’t uncommon for Billie Breland to leave notes around her home, mostly to remember funny things that happened or to remind her of quotes she wanted to remember, so James wasn’t surprised when he found the note tucked away in her checkbook.

“Please don't cry because I died!” the note reads. “Smile because I lived! Know that I'm in a happy place! Know that we will meet again! I will see you there!”

Sims says that the note left by his grandmother, “perfectly sums up the hope and comfort that comes with knowing you’ll meet again in eternity.”
