A Polish woman is facing charges after giving birth to a baby girl during her lunch break at work and abandoning her in a nearby field.
According to reports, 30-year-old Jolanta Czarnecka hid her pregnancy from everybody in her life, and when she suddenly went into labor while at work, she went to a nearby field on her lunch break and gave birth to the baby there. Instead of taking the baby with her and going to the hospital, however, Czarnecka left the newborn girl in the field and returned to work.
Upon arriving at her job, her manager reportedly became concerned when he noticed blood on her shirt. She told him that she was fine, but he insisted on taking her to the hospital.
While at the hospital, Czarnecka admitted that she had given birth to a baby, but she told the doctors it happened on the toilet and that the baby accidentally got flushed. When investigators checked the pipes, however, they couldn’t find the child. Finally, Czarnecka admitted to giving birth in the field, and authorities found the baby two days after she was born in grave condition. Reports say that the child was severely dehydrated and had insects crawling all over her.
“She had been left alone naked and weighed less than a kilogram in part because she was so severely dehydrated,” Dr. Barbara Chomik said. “It is a miracle that she survived under those conditions for so long. It is simply a miracle.”
Czarnecka is now on trial for attempted murder. If convicted, she could face up to five years in jail.
