Woman Arrested For Breastfeeding While Drinking

| by Will Hagle

After a woman was found breastfeeding while drinking alcoholic beverages, she was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The woman, 28-year-old Tasha Adams, was eating at Gusano’s Restaurant in Conway, Ark. with her parents and her 8-month-old child when the arrest was made. Adams claims that she ordered two beers over the course of an hour and a half meal.

“We had a pizza, and then we had a big old thing of spinach dip. Then, I had a beer with that, and then I had another one later on after,” Adams said, according to Yahoo News.

After Adams had consumed her beverages, she began breastfeeding her daughter, Ana. Around that time, an off-duty waitress named Jackie Conners arrived at the restaurant for a staff meeting. She noticed Adams breastfeeding a child with empty alcoholic beverages in front of her, and she decided to notify the police.

Law enforcement officials subsequently arrived at the scene and arrested Adams for endangering the welfare of her child. Speaking with ABC News, Adams admitted that she drank the beers and breastfed her daughter, but explained that she did not believe to be doing anything wrong.

“I did drink. I did breastfeed. I didn’t know it was illegal. If I knew it was illegal, I wouldn’t have done it,” Adams said.

There is no law in Arkansas preventing women from breastfeeding while consuming alcoholic beverages. The authorities, however, can make a judgement call regarding whether or not a child’s health and safety is at risk if the child’s parent is under the influence of alcohol.

For calling the police and having a patron arrested, Conners was fired from Gusano’s Restaurant. Still, the waitress maintained that she believed she was doing the right thing.

“If I was ever in that situation again, I would still do the same thing, because that baby can’t speak up for itself. No one else was doing anything. Even if I knew my job was on the line and it was right around the holidays, I would still do it again,” Conners said.

Adams is the mother of two other children, a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old, neither of whom were present at Gusano's during the incident.
