Woman Who Pushed Husband Out Of Window Dies In Prison

| by Kathryn Schroeder

An Oklahoma woman serving a 25-year prison sentence for pushing her husband out of a high-rise building window has been found dead in her cell of a possible suicide.

Amber Hilberling was convicted of second degree murder in 2013 for the 2011 death of her husband Joshua Hilberling, KTUL reported. She testified that it was self defense that drove her to push Joshua out the 25th floor window. He died after falling through the glass window and landing 17 floors below on a parking garage.

The prosecution argued that Amber pushed Joshua because he was going to leave her while pregnant and she was angry.

Amber’s defense attorneys called Joshua’s death “a tragic accident.”

On the evening of Oct. 24, Amber was found dead at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center.

Speaking with KTUL, Amber’s stepfather Bryan Whitlock said he received a voicemail at work around 5 p.m. the day Amber was found dead, asking for someone to call the prison. When Amber’s mother called, she was notified of her daughter’s death.

Medical staff at the prison told Amber’s parents that her death was being treated as a suicide but did not provide any information on how she took her life.

A source, who only identified themselves as a prison official, told KWTV that Amber was found hanging in her jail cell.

Whitlock told KTUL there is no way that Amber committed suicide, stating that he and his wife spoke to her the night before and she was excited about the opportunity to tell her story in a planned interview with Tulsa’s Channel 8.

Amber was also receiving college credit for work completed while in prison and spoke with her son daily, Whitlock said.

Following the news of Amber’s death, a post was made to the “In Loving Memory of Joshua Hilberling” Facebook page. It reads: “We heard that Amber Hilberling hung herself in prison this evening. We know how it feels to lose a child. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's something no parent should have to experience. Condolences to those who loved her.”

An investigation into Amber’s death is ongoing by the Inspector General’s Office and an official cause of death has yet to be determined.
