A 21-year-old woman was caught on tape in April asking an undercover Michigan State Police officer posing as a hit man to kill her husband, who also happens to be the father of her two children.

Julia Charlene Merfeld told the officer, “It’s not that we weren’t getting along ... terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him. You know, I didn’t have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn’t have to worry about breaking his heart."

Merfeld is cool and collected. She talks about the murder pragmatically the way some people talk about cleaning out a garage.

“This is kind of like a clean getaway,” she said. “I mean, it’s going to break my heart when it happens, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for awhile.”

Merfeld tells the “hit man” she is worried that if they stage a break-in and murder her husband at home, a girlfriend who wants to move in with her might be too afraid to live there.

Merfeld laughs when she says “because I don’t want to live there by myself afterwards.”

She asks that the murder be “painless.”

“Where do you want me to shoot him?” the undercover officer asks.

“I want – not an open casket," she says. "I mean, the most painless way you can possibly do it.”

“I’m going to shoot him right in the face,” he says.

She responds, “OK.”

Policy were tipped off by Merfeld’s coworker, Carlos Ramos, who claimed she offered him $50,000 to kill her husband.

She planned to pay the hit man when she cashed in her husband’s $400,000 life insurance policy.

Merfeld moved to Muskegon from New Jersey when he husband got a job transfer. Their children were staying with relatives in New Jersey at the time of Merfeld’s meetings with the undercover cop.

Merfeld pleaded guilty June 27 to solicitation for murder and is set to be sentenced July 30. She faces for a minimum of six years in jail.
