An Indianapolis, Indiana, school principal reportedly died saving students after a bus jumped a curb.

Two 10-year-old students were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital on Jan. 26 after a school bus drove over a curb and hit Amy Beverland Elementary School principal Susan Jordan and the students, WISH TV reports.

The female bus driver, who was not identified, said that she’s unsure as to why the bus accelerated and ran over the curb. She added that Jordan pushed the students to safety right before the crash.

“We lost a great educator today,” Lawrence Township Schools superintendent Dr. Shawn Smith said of Jordan, according to WISH TV. “Quite frankly, ladies and gentlemen, we’re talking about a legend of education.”

“We express our condolences to the Amy Beverland Elementary School community and Lawrence Township schools,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said following Jordan's death.

The school bus was reportedly inspected four days before the incident and no issues were found. In 2013, Lawrence Township admitted poor maintenance on their buses and took steps to implement changes that would increase safety, WTHR reported.

At the time, a bus mechanic called the problems with the buses “deplorable.”
