A Walmart employee in Michigan is without a job today after trying to help a woman who was being assaulted in the store parking lot.
Kristopher Oswald, 30, was on his lunch break from stocking shelves at 2:30 a.m. when he witnessed a woman being grabbed by a man who was apparently trying to stop her from leaving. Oswald approached the woman to ask if she needed help, but wound up angering the man, who started to punch Oswald in the head. The two men wound up fighting until Oswald pinned the man down, but then two other men jumped him from behind.
Police eventually showed up and broke the fight up, but not before the original suspect could get away. Authorities are still trying to find out who that man is.
The next day, Oswald was fired for violating company policy. In a statement to the AP, company spokeswoman Ashley Hardie maintained that they had no other choice in this matter.

“We had to make a tough decision, one that e don't take lightly, and he's no longer with the company.”
Company policy apparently states that an employee cannot intervene with situations like Oswald did, and that they are just supposed to let it happen. The night of the incident, though, Oswald’s supervisor apparently called his action “brave and selfless.”
“He told me flat out that he wanted to give me the opportunity to say my side and then they’ll make a decision,” says Oswald.
According to Oswald, however, they never gave him that opportunity, and wound up firing him first thing the next day.

Oswald had only been working at the Walmart store for seven weeks, so his job was still in the 180-day probation period. Despite everything that happened as a result of the incident, Oswald says he would do it again exactly the same way.
