The convenience store chain 7-Eleven apologized after a veteran and his service dog were kicked out of a Parsippany, New Jersey, store on Memorial Day.
Michael Deitch and his service dog Sox were walking in the Memorial Day parade when he stopped to get water at the 7-Eleven store.
“I was told to leave immediately,” Deitch told ABC 7 News. “An employee, I didn’t know who he was, came around from the corner in about 30 seconds, by the time I stepped in, and said you have to leave, no dogs are allowed.”
Deitch reportedly told the employee that Sox was a service dog and pointed out his service vest. Despite this, the employee insisted that he leave the store.

Deitch, who served in the Air Force for four years and as a police officer, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is why he needs Sox.
Following the incident, Deitch reached out to 7-Eleven’s corporate offices. In a statement, 7-Eleven noted that it does allow service dogs in its stores and that the event was a misunderstanding on the part of the employee.
“The owner of the franchise called and said he apologized and thanked me for the service,” Deitch said. “I’ve yet to see anyone who was involved from yesterday apologize to me.”

Several Facebook commenters noted that they will no longer frequent the specific 7-Eleven store as a result of its response to Deitch.
