Unexplained Giant Crack Forms In Northern Mexico (Video)

Experts are trying to figure out what could be the cause of a giant crack that’s split the ground in Mexico.

The crack, which spans a half-mile, recently appeared in a remote farmland in Mexico, and since it opened up last week, it’s split Highway 26 on the northern coast of the country.

Local residents and officials are completely baffled by the split, but as The Huffington Post reports, there isn’t a huge cause for alarm right now.

"It's definitely not a cause for alarm for the population," said University of Mexico’s Martin Valencia Moreno to Excelsior, as translated by the Huffington Post. “It's more something sensationalist and people like to encourage that sort of thing."

Experts don’t believe that an earthquake caused the giant crack, but one theory is that it was caused by an underground stream.
