UNC May Expel Rape Victim Landen Gambill For Speaking About Her Case
Landen Gambill, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina, is being sent to the school’s “Honor Court” for speaking publicly about her rape. Officials at the school are saying that Gambill is being “disruptive” and might be “intimidating” her rapist by exposing the details of when she was sexually assaulted. Gambill has not publicly indentified her rapist.
It is possible that the court could expel her.
Gambill was one of three students to support a former UNC dean’s accusations that the university intentionally under-reported sexual assaults. According to Think Progress, UNC has probably sent Gambill to Honor Court as revenge.
When talking about UNC’s system for addressing sexual assault accusations, Gambill said: “[They] were not only offensive and inappropriate, but they were so victim-blaming… They made it seem like my assault was completely my fault.”
Gambill was first notified about a possible court appearance by a school attorney about one month ago, on Jan. 29. On Feb. 22, Gambill received a formal accusation calling her in to the court. It reads:
Accordingly, you are being charged with the following Honor Code violation(s): II.C.1.c. – Disruptive or intimidating behavior that willfully abuses, disparages, or otherwise interferes with another (other than on the basis of protected classifications identified and addressed in the University’s Policy on Prohibited Harassment and Discrimination) so as to adversely affect their academic pursuits, opportunities for University employment, participation in University-sponsored extracurricular activities, or opportunities to benefit from other aspects of University Life.
This decision was reached because the evidence provides a reasonable basis to believe that a violation of the Honor Code may have occurred. Please note that being charged with a violation does not imply guilt. It simply means that sufficient evidence of a possible violation exists to warrant a hearing before the Undergraduate Honor Court.
Gambill’s peers have organized protests at the school and have vocally defended her in college papers.

Looking at other sources, it
Looking at other sources, it appears there isn't any proof that the rape actually occurred, so perhaps we are to quick to make uninformed judgements. I still feel the university is handling the case poorly though.
I grew up near a Big 10
I grew up near a Big 10 university & campus rapes were a common occurance, though rarely prosecuted. Colleges & Universities have been covering up, intimidated rape victims and under reporting sexual assaults for at least 30 years. Every year thousands of small town high school graduates go off to live on college campuses completely trusting that their college cares about their safety, when in fact campus cops & college counselors are paid to keep crimes on campus from ever being officially filed or prosecuted. College campuses have proven they do not police themselves & too often local media just help them cover up crimes. Hopefully the Internet will help students & parents access information about the most dangerous campuses in this country BEFORE they make their choice of where to go for higher education. Students will have to rely on inside information from other students. It's up to the students to support & protect each other by exposing school policies that are unfair or endanger students. At least, today's students have the Net , the ability to remain anonymous on on-site computers, and a way to bring national attention to these cases.
The writing on the wall is
The writing on the wall is obviously misconstrued as an 'unexpected' outrage. It seems perfectly clear evidence of legitimate reason to disassociate entirely from any academic venue providing additional rape, molestation & counter-productiveness. There are many colleges with Christian values available to pursue degrees without the torments of violent rape and alienation. The opportunity to be expelled would only serve as documented evidence of severe dysfunction & disgracefulness! When rapists are afforded 'defense', it's time to crotch stomp their nuts!

You are sorely mistaken if
You are sorely mistaken if you believe sexual assaults do not occur on the campuses of Christian Colleges. Did you attend a Christian College? I did for two years because it was a local college. There was no noticeable difference between what happened there and what happened at the state university where I completed my degree.
The US Dept of Education has a searchable database for crimes reported on college and university campuses.
I formulated a search for the year 2011, for 4 year private colleges offering a degree in theology and religious vocations. It reported for 2009, 2010, and 2011
Forcible sexual offenses: 2009 - 262, 2010 - 311, 2011 - 344

Estimates are over 50 percent of rapes are never reported. My guess would be that women on Christian campuses are even less likely to report a sexual assault.

If the universities "doctor" their reports then how many more sexual assaults actually occur?
Many women in general do not report rapes because of the way rape victims are treated. I have often wondered what the point would be in reporting a rape when 97 percent of rapists never spend a day in jail.

Savannah - Feb 27 2013 - 1:31am "... I have often wondered what the point would be in reporting a rape when 97 percent of rapists never spend a day in jail...."
And 97% of the victims are treated as criminals by the system.
Um,isn't this how the asshole
Um,isn't this how the asshole Muslims treat rape victims?
They've got a problem with
They've got a problem with intimidating a rapist with facts about what he did to another human being?
They're threatening to expel this woman for speaking up about how UNC failed to protect her or take appropriate action when she reported the rape? How do these people sleep at night?
I know I'll never hire someone from UNC now - too large a chance that graduate is a rapist (much like that Wisk guy in the sidebar ad that's staring at me like he thinks I'm purty and easy).
Interesting how we haven't heard anything about them expelling the rapist for " Disruptive or intimidating behavior that willfully abuses, disparages, or otherwise interferes with another (other than on the basis of protected classifications identified and addressed in the University’s Policy on Prohibited Harassment and Discrimination) so as to adversely affect their academic pursuits, opportunities for University employment, participation in University-sponsored extracurricular activities, or opportunities to benefit from other aspects of University Life."
I'm pretty sure that rape falls pretty neatly into that description.
This and the account related
This and the account related in that Huffington Post article are no surprise. Here in Missouri, during a fight (which academic officials successfully opposed) to remove legal restrictions on licensed CCW on campus, it became an open secret that rapes on campuses in Rolla, Springfield, Columbia, and St. Louis are many times the "official" numbers. The colleges demand that students report rapes and/or attempted rapes to the campus police rather than to the city police. The campus PD then either downgrade it to misdemeanor simple assault or civil disturbance and never pass a report along to legitimate law enforcement agencies. The accused rapist may or may not be ordered to attend "counselling." But above all, these schools don't want the victims to go public because publicizing the real crime rates on the campuses could affect recruiting and the institution's financial bottom line.
This is also why the schools' administrations fought and continue to fight legal CCW on campus. If adults with CCW permits were allowed to defend themselves on campuses, the results would include attempted rapists getting shot, i.e, injuries that the local PD instead of campus police would handle AND REPORT. Better to sacrifice a few rape victims than risk the school's claims of safe campuses.
Rapists always protect
Rapists always protect rapists. Start looking really close at the so called "honor" court. Bet their dirt runs to the core.
Those that can't or won't defend themselves can only be slaves.
As usual there is way more to
As usual there is way more to this story than is being reported by OV.

Apparently, some sexual assault cases have been handled by the UNC Honor Court instead of the police. Why on earth would that *ever* be permitted?
More and more it seems that
More and more it seems that the guilty-minded are trying to force people into alternative venues for seeking justice, mostly mitigate liability, but also to escape the justice they are due.
More and more corporations are requiring customers accept "binding arbitration" as part of their service contracts, and these guys have found out that by just expelling the victims they can likely quash lawsuits for not providing a safer learning environment for their students - because if it goes to court and the University is found negligent... they lose $$$.
They're turning this young girl's health, sanity, and well-being into a question of money.
Protecting a rapist? What the
Protecting a rapist? What the hell is wrong with this school?
