KTVU reporter Alex Savidge was almost hit by a car while doing a live report on a train derailment in Fremont, California, on March 8 (video below).

Cameraman Chip Vaughan yelled at Savidge to "get out of the way," while the two were standing in a 7-Eleven parking lot, notes KTVU.

Fortunately, Savidge jumped to his right and the car came rushing in on the left, missing him.

"It happened in a split second," Vaughan said. "I'm just thankful he jumped the right way."

A police officer saw a young black couple drive by and pulled them over. What he did next left them stunned:

After the car hit some TV lighting equipment, Vaughan and Savidge shouted that they were OK.

KTVU posted on Facebook: "CLOSE CALL: It was a very scary moment this morning as Alex Savidge [...] was live on Mornings on 2. A car crashed nearby and careened toward Alex and our photographer, hitting the camera. We wanted to let you know that everyone is ok."

During his next report, Savidge said, "I just would like to thank Chip; thanks buddy."

"I don't know if my wife... she's not watching," Savidge added. "I haven't been able to call her. I just want to tell my wife I'm OK and my family in case they hear it online."

"I'm starting to come back a little, but yeah, I'm still a little shook up," Savidge told the San Jose Mercury News by phone. "We were doing the live shot, and the video was showing. I'm reading the script off my phone, and I heard a screech out of the corner of my ears. And right then, I heard Chip yell, 'Watch out!'"

"I don't know how close it was, but it was too close," Savidge added. "I saw the video. Seeing it made me realize how lucky I am."

According to the police, the driver of the white car may have stepped on the accelerator instead of hitting the brakes. The driver reportedly lost her license, and the crash is being investigated.
