Trump Winery Seeking Foreign Workers

| by Oren Peleg

A Trump-owned vineyard in Virginia is looking to hire workers for the new year -- foreign workers, that is. President-elect Donald Trump spent much of his campaign focused on bringing jobs back to America.

According to CNN, the Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia, filed with the U.S. Department of Labor stating that it needs six workers six days a week from Jan. 31 through June 30, 2017. The workers would be paid $10.72 an hour. Trump will be sworn into office, and thus have control over the Labor Department, beginning Jan. 20.

“This is a powerful example of why Donald Trump needs to make a definitive break, not just with his operational interests but his ownership interests, by appointing an independent trustee to liquidate all that,” Norm Eisen, former White House ethics lawyer to President Barack Obama and current visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, told The Washington Post. He added that the situation is “a classic conflict of interest.”

“It’s critically important that these [types of requests] be handled by career employees in federal agencies who have civil service protections,” said Richard Painter, former White House ethics lawyer and current law professor at the University of Minnesota Law School. “Anyone appointed by him should be required to recuse themselves. It’s not required by law, but he should do it anyway.”

According to BuzzFeed, the filing is an approval request for H2 visas, which allow foreign workers to enter the U.S. and fill jobs that American citizens are unable to fill.

"You cannot get help during the season,” Trump said earlier this year in response to reporters’ questions about the foreign workers, adds CNN. “The season goes from like October to March. It's almost impossible to get help. … And part of the reason you can't get American people is they want full time jobs."

BuzzFeed adds that, since the start of Trump’s presidential campaign, 263 foreign worker visa requests have been filed by companies owned by or affiliated with the Trump Organization.

CNN reports that Trump has hired at least 1,256 foreign workers over the last 15 years at his various properties and businesses.
