Comey: Trump Lied, Was Briefed On Russian Dossier

| by Lauren Briggs

President-elect Donald Trump's transition team said that he was never briefed on the unverified reports that Russian intelligence officials have allegedly gathered compromising information on him. But FBI Director James Comey said that was not true.

Reporters from CNN, ABC News, and CNN all posted tweets that Comey pulled Trump aside and had a one-on-one conversation regarding the allegations surrounding Trump's sexual and financial history with Russia.

NBC had initially reported that officials had not spoken to Trump regarding the dossier, though the network now notes that Comey and other U.S. intelligence elites made a special trip to New York to brief the president-elect on all the information they had on the matter.

BuzzFeed published the 35-page document on Jan. 10, which had been circulating through the media for some time, but has not been substantiated and is fraught with errors. In addition to compromising information on Trump's personal and business affairs, the memos also state that Trump's team has been communicating with the Russian government in secret throughout the duration of his campaign.

"Intel and law enforcement officials agree that none of the investigations have found any conclusive or direct link between Trump and the Russian government period," said a senior official who told NBC that Trump had not been briefed.

Vice President Joe Biden said on Jan. 12 that members of the intelligence community had also briefed him and President Barack Obama regarding the documents, according to CNN.

Biden said that he read the entire 35-page report, and his office also told reporters that Obama questioned the relevance of the news. Officials then reportedly said that they were divulging the information to the pair, because they intended to brief Trump on it next.

Several senators said that they discussed the two-page synopsis at a closed Senate intelligence meeting that same day.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper issued a statement regarding the information, saying that the intelligence community "has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable," and have not yet come to any conclusions yet.

"However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security," he added.
