After it seemed like he wouldn't, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is expected to endorse Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan's bid to retain his congressional seat in Wisconsin.

The endorsement is expected to be made during a Trump rally in Wisconsin, reported CNN.

But Trump had repeatedly avoided an avid endorsement of Ryan. During an interview with The Washington Post, Trump hinted that he didn't think Ryan was a strong leader.

"I like Paul, but these are horrible times for our country,” when asked if he would support the House Speaker's re-election campaign.“We need very strong leadership. We need very, very strong leadership. And I'm just not quite there yet. I'm not quite there yet.”

In addition, Trump complimented Paul Nehlen, a pro-Trump businessman who is challenging Ryan in the Republican primary for the contested congressional seat, on Twitter.

Nehlen had written a scathing blog post about Ryan's interpretation of Trump's proposed ban on Muslims.

“Thanks to @pnehlen for your kind words, very much appreciated,” Trump tweeted Aug. 1.

Trump also told The Washington Post that Nehlen was running “a very good campaign.”

But it's unclear if Ryan even wants Trump's endorsement, reported CNN. When asked about it on local talk radio shows, Ryan has repeatedly said he only wants the endorsement of voters. But there might also be a worry that Trump's poor poll numbers and seemingly constant stream of controversial statements coming from Trump's mouth and Twitter feed aren't exactly beneficial to Ryan.

And Ryan himself took his time in endorsing Trump when it became clear the real estate mogul would win the GOP primary.

"I'm just not ready to do that at this point. I'm not there right now," Ryan told CNN on May 6.

Ryan eventually endorsed Trump days later.
