Trump Again Criticizes Federal Judges

| by Ray Brown

Echoing one of the most controversial events of his winning campaign, President Donald Trump criticized federal judges weighing in on a case he's involved in.

Speaking to law enforcement officials about his executive order temporarily banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, Trump said judges are too "political." The order was immediately stopped by a federal judge and is now in another round in the federal courts on whether it should be reinstated.

"I don’t want to call a court biased, so I won’t call it biased," Trump said, according to The Hill. "Courts seem to be so political and it would be so great for our justice system if they could read a statement and do what’s right."

Trump went on to say that, as president, he should be allowed to implement rules about which nationalities should be allowed to enter the United States.

"A bad high school student would understand this. Anybody would understand this," Trump said.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump caused controversy when he criticized U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was presiding over a lawsuit against Trump University, for being biased against him because Curiel is of Hispanic heritage and Trump was campaigning on an anti-immigration platform.

"He's proud of his his heritage. I respect him for that. He's a Mexican," Trump said of Curiel, who was born in India, during a June 2016 interview with CNN. "We're building a wall between here and Mexico."

CNN's Jake Tapper then asked: "If you are saying he cannot do his job because of his race, is that not the definition of racism?"

"No, I don't think so at all," Trump said, adding: "If he was giving me a fair ruling, I wouldn't say that. I think that's why he's doing it."

The Trump University lawsuit was brought forth by former students who claim the school engaged in deceptive marketing.

According to Politico, Trump settled with the students for $25 million in December 2016.
